Hehe...
this fountain has been 0wn3d with a purple food coloring exploit.

Pics
of me and Renderman with Simple Nomad. To anyone who's never read Simple's
"Widdershins" piece, you really should. Being there to
hear it at DC9 was absolutely stunning.

My
finest compliments again must be stated about the Ghettohackers
and their organization of this year's Capture the Flag hacking competition.
Not only did they have a real-time "stock price style" scoreboard
set to techno music, but they also had a dizzying array of cartoons,
old time commercials for beer and coffee, and "news breaks"
reminiscent of the film Blade
Runner.
|

|
Above
is a panoramic video shot of the CTF LAN area and a whacky cartoon with
a pounding techno soundtrack.
|
The
realtime stock-price-style scoreboard was a cool addition to the CTF
competition.
|
This
is a clip showing one of the "Blade Runner" style news breaks.

|
The
DefCon "Wall of Sheep." If you check your email or VNC to
your home computer over a non-encrypted link, you're a moron and will
likely be listed here.
|
Nate
Rotschafer, a student at the University of Nebraska gave a pretty good
talk about biometric devices.
|
|
|
These
are clips from Nate's talk. He covered aspects of many types of devices
and he also discussed attacks on these systems that can be performed
by capturing data as it is passed along the wire. Neat stuff.

My
flyer about hacking one's TV was certainly not the only one posted at
the con. This flyer advertised a link to a site selling X-Box
mod chips.
|
A
shot of the
DefCon vendor area. |
It
takes us geeks a while, but by the end of the con more and more people
were getting into the pools.
|
|
To
escape the Nevada sun, people started jumping in the pool regardless
of what they were wearing.
|
||
|
We
chose to escape the sun by watching movies on DefCon TV. Whoever can
identify the film seen in this clip, email
me. First one to do so wins a prize. :-)

These
two photos were from V1RU5's kick ass talk on malicious code, worms,
trojans, etc. The videos below are also from this panel. Lupo is always
one of my favorite speakers when i get to see him.

|
|
|
|
|
V1RU5
was also on the team that won the DefCon scavenger hunt. Yes, that is
an airline life jacket they're holding up on stage.
|
The
Dark Tangent...
the one responsible for DefCon. He was very pleased with how it's grown
and how well this year went.
|
|
|
The
winning team for Hacker Jeopardy was the Detroit Crew. They jumped ahead
in final jeopardy by getting the correct answer to the port math question.
The answer... 31337.
|
The
Orange Team won this year's Capture the Flag competition. They took
a severe drop in the score rankings at one point in the game, but they
never lost hope and came out on top.

I
have to say, if you've never tried to socially engineer your way into
first class... try it! It wasn't that hard. I expressed concern over
an "injured knee" that I had "suffered while on vacation"
and asked if there was any way to be moved to an aisle seat or bulkhead
section where I could keep my leg straight. I was told that although
there were no such options in my section, for a minimal fee they could
seat me in first class since there was an opening. I was given priority
over frequent flyers and other persons who wanted to upgrade.
|
I
nearly lost it when they offered us beverage service prior to takeoff.
Free beer? Uhm, could you come back to me? I have to think about it.
:-)
|
|
|
A
shot of the Vegas strip
visible on takeoff. |
I
was totally in awe of the comfort and the view. I knew the exhilaration
Homer Simpson felt over his ride on the Duff blimp.
|
The
first course of our meal (not counting the cocktails, nuts, and rolls
that we were served just after takeoff.)
|
|
I
chose the Mushroom Ravioli for my entrée. The other selections
were an Old Fashioned Meatloaf Sandwich or a Chicken Fajita Salad.
|
For
desert I went with chocolate, caramel, and Bailey's Irish Cream over
vanilla ice cream.
|
This
was easily one of the best Cons that I have attended.
