David Axelrod was born to Jewish parents in 1955 in the Lower East Side of New York City and grew up in Manhattan.  At just 13 years old, he was selling campaign buttons for Robert F. Kennedy.

After attending Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, Axelrod attended the University of Chicago, where he majored in political science. He met his future wife, business student Susan Landau, there.
