Project 7- Mapping the Internet IPv4 Address Space of Various Countries

As some of you may know, IP addresses for countries were assigned on a haphazard basis. That meant that one country's IPv4 address space that was assigned to it was spread out in unrelated chunks. To the best of my knowledge there is no one good place to go if you want to know what IP addresses a particular country might have. Sure that information is in pertinent registry databases, but those databases do not allow a search to easily retrieve a complete list of IPs associated with a particular country. This is my attempt to correct that.

This project looks at the IPv4 address space assigned to various countries. It basically was assembled by painstaking searches through the various registry databases (i.e., RIPE, APNIC, ARIN) and recording how the various subnets were layed out and to which entities those subnets and subsection of IPs were assigned. I then employed what is known as a "Ping Sweep" to give me an idea of which subnets may be more active than others. If you don't know what a ping sweep is, I suggest you look up "nmap" on Google. Anyway, it's true that just because a machine may be pingable, it may actually be down and vice versa. Just because a given subnet wasn't pingable, that doesn't mean it wasn't being utilized. It depends on how the routers and firewalls at particular zones are set up. So the project is not meant to be an exact representation of a country's true networking typography, but only an approximation of what range of their address space is currently active and reachable from over the Internet. Also, keep in mind that the IPs I report as being up may be down during different parts of the day or week. The ping sweep was merely used as an indication of activity of various subnets in comparison to other subnets in the same range.

As to which countries I decided to include in this survey, I had no real method of choosing them. Usually, it depends on which one I'm pissed off at when it's time to pick. To date, these are the countries that I have mapped out:

Middle East/Southwest Asia

Iran
Pakistan
Afghanistan
Iraq
Saudi Arabia
Syria
Lebanon
Jordan
Kuwait
Bahrain
Qatar
United Arab Emirates
Yemen
Oman
Palestine
Israel

Asia

People's Republic of China
(Partial. No Ping Sweep. Taiwan not included.)

Europe

Iceland
Albania
